UCI Track World Championships 1981

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 71st UCI Track World Championships took place from August 31 to September 5, 1981 on the cycling track in Brno , Czechoslovakia .

The cycle track was a 400-meter-long cement track. A total of 14 titles were awarded, more than ever before, seven titles to the amateurs, five to the professionals and two to the women.

The West German Fredy Schmidtke won two silver medals, in the 1000-meter time trial and - although he fell badly in the sprint tournament - in the tandem race . The reason for the fall in the round of 16 was assumed to be that the track was still too damp after a light rain. Despite his injuries, Schmidtke started the next round, but then lost to the GDR athlete Michael Hübner . The specialist magazine Radsport criticized the fact that the team of the Association of German Cyclists (BDR) did not have their own doctor with them and that Schmidtke therefore had to be treated by Czechoslovak and Soviet doctors.

In contrast, the results of the German pursuers were disappointing, with the four-wheeler , once the flagship of the BDR, already eliminated in the quarter-finals. The cycling spoke of "the decline of the former prime discipline of the West German cycling".

The West German cycling magazine also complained about the final of the professional stayers as "an hour of boredom". The "permanent glory" is over and it is a "dying discipline". In total there were only eleven stayers from five nations, including two Japanese and one British .
