Arie van Vliet won his second world title in Zurich

The 43 UCI Track Cycling World Championships were held from August 21 to 26 1953 at the velodrome in Zurich-Oerlikon instead.

The stadium had been thoroughly overhauled for these world championships. When the repairs were due to take place, the painters in Zurich went on strike, and so the cycling officials, including the President of the Swiss Cyclists Association (SRB), Carl Senn, had to lend a hand themselves. Werner Potzernheim from Hanover won the only medal for the German team, a bronze one in the amateur sprint .
