UCI Track World Championships 1962
The 52nd UCI Track World Championships took place from August 24th to 28th, 1962 on the Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan .
The competition program was expanded to include the team pursuit by a further discipline to nine. The first world champion was the German four-wheeler who was trained by Karl Ziegler . At the award ceremony, the four German athletes were initially not supposed to receive rainbow jerseys because this was not intended for teams, but then some were brought in: “You only allow yourself that with Germans,” wrote cycling .
The World Championships took place without athletes from the “ Zone ”: the Italian government had refused their visas in protest against the construction of the Berlin Wall the year before. For the same reason, East German athletes had already been denied participation in the 1962 Alpine World Ski Championships in Chamonix and the Ice Hockey World Championships in Colorado Springs .
Although women took part in a World Track Championship for the fifth time, there was hardly any coverage of their races in cycling . Instead, the reporter Gerd Rensmann wrote : “There was less laughter than expected at the women's competitions, which of course are not very well received in a patriarchal country like Italy.” The journalist admitted: “From that. These girls were quick. "
