Antonio Maspes (born January 15, 1932 in Milan , † October 19, 2000 ibid) was an Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

Antonio Maspes was a multiple Italian champion and won bronze together with Cesare Pinarello in the tandem competition of the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki . Maspes then became a professional driver and was active until 1968. Because of its impressive ability to try standing , the track sprinter was called the “king of balance”. On his home track, the Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan, Maspes was a celebrated star and as a professional he became the best sprinter of his time. He won seven titles at track cycling world championships , in Milan 1955, Copenhagen 1956, Amsterdam 1959, Leipzig 1960 , Zurich 1961, Milan 1962 and Paris 1964. Maspes was Italian champion eleven times in the track sprint. On July 21, 1960 Maspes set a new world record over 200 meters (10.08 seconds) in Rome. He was the only driver to win the renowned sprint classic Grand Prix de Paris five times in a row .

Maspes' attempt to stand together with the Dutchman Jan Derksen on his home track in Milan during the Track Cycling World Championships in 1955, which lasted 32 minutes and 20 seconds and was finally canceled by the referees, is legendary .

Trivia

As a teenager, Maspes gave the wrong date of birth several times in order to be able to take part in the men's competitions. In 1967 he was given a suspended sentence for participating in illegal gambling.
