Pietro Bixio

Pietro Bixio (born August 11, 1875 in Genoa , † July 26, 1905 in Busalla ) was an Italian track cyclist .

Three times - in 1895, 1903 and 1904 - Pietro Bixio was Italian champion in the professional sprint . In 1900 he started at the Olympic Games in Paris in the Grand Prix de l'Exposition , which was advertised for professionals and valued at 15,000 French francs , making it the most highly endowed cycle race in the world to date. Bixio was eliminated in the semifinals. In the team competition Grande Course de Nations over 1500 meters (in the form of a points run ) he finished third together with Gian Ferdinando Tomaselli and Giuseppe Singrossi , which was endowed with 3000 francs.

At the UCI Track World Championships in Rome in 1902 , Bixio took third place in the professional sprint , making him the first Italian to win an individual medal at the World Cycling Championships. In 1903 he also took third place at the Grand Prix de Paris . He won the Italian Grand Prix in sprinting in 1895, which was also the first time the race was held.

Bixio died of an incurable disease at the age of 29.
