Ernst Kaufmann , also Ernest Kauffmann , (born June 9, 1895 in Bellikon / Canton Aargau ; † December 20, 1943 ibid), was a Swiss cyclist . In 1925 he became world champion in the professional sprint in Amsterdam .

Ernst Kaufmann was one of the best international sprinters in the period after the First World War . He started his racing career in 1912 as an amateur in Switzerland, but soon went abroad as he was unable to develop further in Switzerland due to a lack of equal opponents. In the following years he won 21 Swiss championship titles on track and road . His first national title win is considered a specialty of cycling in Switzerland. When he started the championship race on August 12, 1912, he had not yet competed on a cycling track. However, he won this championship straight away.

In 1913 Kaufmann started for the first time, still as an amateur, on the track of the German Stadium in Berlin at the World Railroad Championships. In 1925 he became world champion among professionals, then went to the USA , where he won 13 of 21 races as Ernest Kauffmann . During his entire active career, which lasted 20 years, Kaufmann won around 800 races, including the prestigious “ Grand Prix de Paris ” sprinter prize twice . In 1921 he won the Berlin Grand Prix in front of a record crowd of 31,000 spectators in the German Stadium .

In 1923 Kaufmann (with the support of Fredy Budzinski ) also wrote the book Der Radrennsport. Flying races .

In 1932, Kaufmann retired from his active racing career. He designed bicycles, worked as a representative for bicycle companies and also acted as head of the cycling track in Zurich-Oerlikon for two years . Shortly before Christmas 1943, Kaufmann succumbed to kidney disease.
