history

The San Clemente Pier was built in 1928 with a length of around 395 meters. During the time of Prohibition in the United States (1919-1933), the pier was one of the port of call for alcohol smugglers in Orange County . In 1939, a severe hurricane destroyed the structure, which was then rebuilt for 40,000 US dollars .

Another storm tore in 1983 around 120 meters from the end of the pier and 24 meters from the central part. The damage to the wooden structure was not repaired until two years later. The construction work cost 1.4 million US dollars. A renovation of the structure in the amount of 2.5 million US dollars is planned from October 2009.

The historic pier is still a popular leisure destination for locals and holidaymakers today. From many different perspectives there is a wide view over the sea and the coastline of Orange County and San Diego County to the south .
