history

Stadtlauringen

A first documentary mention is known from the year 794. In 1484, Prince-Bishop Rudolf II von Scherenberg granted the town of Lauringen, later Niederlauringen, town and market rights and jurisdiction. Since that time the place has been called Stadtlauringen. The city rights were returned in 1818, the market rights could be retained.

Oberlauringen

In the Oberlauringen district, Jewish families had lived at least since the 19th century. They formed a Jewish community and built their synagogue at Friedrich-Rückert-Strasse 13-19 . During the November pogrom in 1938 , the inside of the church was smashed by SA men ; some Jewish residents were kicked out of their homes. A plaque on the outer wall of the building that was used for other purposes reminds of its former function.

The poet and orientalist Friedrich Rückert spent his childhood and youth in Oberlauringen from 1793 to 1802. He wrote down his memories of it in the volume of poetry “Memories from the childhood of a village administrator's son”, published in 1829. The Friedrich Rückert Poetic and a circular route are dedicated to him.
