The Ellertshäuser See (alternative name no longer used today: Fuchsstädter See ) is a reservoir in the Schweinfurt Rhön between Ebertshausen and Fuchsstadt in the Schweinfurt district ( Lower Franconia ). The lake is located in the Altenmünster district of Markt Stadtlauringen , is operated by the Free State of Bavaria and is used for flood protection , local recreation and low water elevation .

Naming

Where the lake is today, there used to be the Ellertshausen desert . Ellertshausen was probably made arable by monks around the year 1000. These belonged to the Neustadt am Main monastery and already had a branch in Altenmünster . As sovereigns, the Counts of Henneberg -Aschach also owned the village of Eylicheshusen . In 1480 Ellertshausen was called a desert. It then changed hands several times over the centuries. Administratively, Ellertshausen belonged to the Rotenstein office since 1593 and shortly afterwards to Stadtlauringen . In 1699 the Teutonic Order, Münnerstadt and the Hochstift Würzburg wanted to repopulate Ellertshausen together, but this failed due to the resistance of property owners.

Original usage

The Ellertshäuser See was created in the area of the former municipality of Altenmünster . As a water reservoir, it should enable irrigation of the fields of the surrounding communities , which belong to the large area of the Franconian dry plate . As part of the land consolidation in the 1950s, the water and soil association was established as an operator and user community. Construction began in 1955. The lake was flooded from 1957 to spring 1958. However, it was never used for irrigation because the costs for setting up and maintaining the irrigation systems were too high. In 1970 the lake was sold to the Free State of Bavaria by the Water and Soil Association .

Todays use

The lake is now used as a recreational area. Large parts are approved for swimming, diving , sailing and fishing . The remaining areas are designed as biotopes and designated as nature reserves. Another use is that of water retention, to avoid flooding in spring when the snow melts and to feed the Sauerquellenbach with enough water in the dry season in summer and autumn.

With a total area of 33 hectares, the lake is the largest reservoir in Lower Franconia . It is surrounded by forest all around. The circular route is 4.4 km long. Parts of the north shore of the lake have sunbathing areas, sandy beaches and bathing jetties.

dam

The dam is a 25 m high and 270 m (according to other information 240 m) long earth dam. It has an inclined core seal on the inside. There are different specifications for the dam volume: 97,000 or 100,000 m³.

Trivia

The lake is signposted as a tourist information board on both the A70 and A71 motorways . Both motorways run past this lake about 15 km away.
