history

8th to 14th century

Archaeological finds have proven that people have settled in the area of today's Maßbach market. Written records of donations to the Fulda monastery mention the place for the first time around 770 AD.

Around the year 825, the Massbach belonging to Maßbach and 899 the place Poppenlauer were also mentioned for the first time. The district of Volkershausen was first documented in 1198. Most of what is now northern Lower Franconia with Maßbach and its surroundings was part of the feudal area of the Counts of Henneberg . The lords of Maßbach were their vassals. By the year 1100 Maßbach already had market rights . Maßbach was from the beginning a Henneberg center for Maßbach, Poppenlauer, Thundorf, Theinfeld, Rothhausen, Stadtlauringen, Reinhardshausen, Ballingshausen, Ebertshausen, Hoppachshof, Madenhausen, Volkershausen and the submerged towns of Ransbach, Weissensee and Stündingshausen. Zent Maßbach had its heyday in the 12th – 14th centuries. Century. During the time of the tribal duchies, Maßbach was in the Duchy of Franconia .

15th to 18th century

The properties in Maßbach were pledged or resold several times due to financial difficulties. In 1408 the brothers Eberhard and Albrecht von Maßbach bought back the Maßbach Castle with its central and village court from Prince Wilhelm von Henneberg-Schleusingen for 2000 Rhenish guilders. When the line of the Henneberg family died out in 1583, the Saxon dukes and the Saxon elector, as heirs of the Henneberg family, received part of the Maßbach estates that they jointly administered from Meiningen. The prince-bishop of Würzburg exchanged the other part and other goods for the area around Meiningen. As a result, there were two village lords in Maßbach, the Wettin dukes of Saxony and the prince-bishop of Würzburg .

Since the Reformation had already been introduced in Maßbach before that time , the Saxon princes retained their sovereignty in spiritual matters. When Count Melchior von Hatzfeld received the Saxon fiefdom in Maßbach as a gift before the Elector of Saxony in 1637, this was done with the proviso that the Saxon church sovereignty would not be affected. The Hatzfeld era ended in Maßbach in 1699, when the Lords of Rosenbach, who had already acquired the Thundorf estate and palace in Maßbach in 1676, including the Schaumberg subjects, bought the property of the Hatzfeld counts for 55,000 guilders.

When the Henneberg inheritance was divided into the individual lines of the House of Wettin (1660), the Saxon possessions in and around Maßbach fell, as well as the feudal lordship over goods and rights in the vicinity to Saxony-Altenburg or after this line had expired (1672) Saxony-Eisenach . After the Saxon-Eisenach family died out in 1741, the Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach took over the rights. At that time, the area belonged to the back court of the Lichtenberg district as an exclave .

19th century to the present

With the political reorganization of the empire at the beginning of the 19th century, the rule of the Duke of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in the rule of Maßbach also ended. However, in 1806 the duke was able to withdraw the fiefdoms that had fallen back due to the expiry of the barons of Rosenbach. The sovereign was the Elector of Bavaria from 1802 to 1806, the Grand Duke of Würzburg from 1806 to 1815 , and from 1816 the King of Bavaria .

When the landlord's burdens were removed, the Grand Duke only had the Kammergut zu Maßbach, which was acquired in 1872 by the ironworks owner Benckiser from Pforzheim. It is still owned by the family today. At the end of the 19th century, the Benckiser family built a castle, called "Villa", on the Schalksberg, which today houses the Franconian Theater , which is well known in southern Germany . The Franconian Theater opened a heated open-air stage in the courtyard in 1960, on which open-air performances take place in the summer months of June, July and August in front of the castle's backdrop.

Maßbach already had 1245 inhabitants in 1939 and, thanks to its property as a former headquarters, formed the central community in the upper Lauertal with a large number of trading and handicraft businesses. But at that time agriculture was still the main source of income for the population. With the admission of displaced persons, the number of inhabitants rose to over 2000 in 1949. The population of Poppenlauer also grew to over 2000. Gradually, a structural change also began from a purely agricultural community with trade and craft businesses to a community predominantly inhabited by workers with a commercial center function.

Since the territorial reform of 1972, the towns of Poppenlauer, Volkershausen and Weichtung belong to Markt Maßbach.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent communities Poppenlauer, Theinfeld, Volkershausen and Weichten were incorporated.

Outsourcing

On May 1, 1978 Theinfeld was ceded to the neighboring community of Thundorf in Lower Franconia .

Coat of arms history: The coat of arms of the municipality of Maßbach is identical to the family coat of arms of the Counts of Massbach, who owned the local rule until it died out in 1637. There have been seal impressions of this coat of arms since the 14th century. The coat of arms has been used by the municipality since the end of the 19th century. However, color information from this time does not exist. In the illustrations the silver coat of arms surfaces are cross-hatched. The municipality applied for the coat of arms to be awarded as early as 1937, but this was not dealt with any further because of the outbreak of war in 1939.

The current coat of arms was awarded on April 14, 1949 by the Ministry of the Interior.
