The Bavarian Rhön Nature Park is located in the districts of Bad Kissingen and Rhön-Grabfeld in the far north of Bavaria , right on the border triangle with Hesse and Thuringia . The Bavarian Rhön Nature Park was founded in 1967. On November 26, 1982, the Ordinance on the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park was issued. 1997 the Zweckverband in the association nature park and biosphere reserve Bayer. Rhön e. V. converted. In 2014, the Bavarian part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve was enlarged roughly to the limits of the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park from 72,800 hectares to 130,500 hectares.

Location and limits

The nature park is bounded to the north by the border from Bavaria to Thuringia and Hesse, to the west by the border between the Bad Kissingen district and the Main-Spessart district .

The south and south-east border runs along traffic routes (mostly B 287 , but in sections also district roads and railway lines) so that the valley of the Franconian Saale upstream via Hammelburg to Bad Neustadt an der Saale is just within. To the north-northeast of the district town, it roughly follows the Streu via Mellrichstadt to Stockheim , from where it runs in the eastern Rhön foothills roughly along the rock boundary from the red sandstone in the west to the shell limestone in the east in the form of a semicircle open to the east to the Thuringian border.

The nature park is located between Spessart , Vogelsberg , Thuringian Forest , Haßberge and Steigerwald . It is characterized by mixed forests , rivers, moors , grassland and dry biotopes.
