The Spessart Nature Park (founded in 1960) in north-west Bavaria is 1710 km².

The Spessart is a low mountain range and one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany. It extends into the two federal states of Bavaria and Hesse . North of the Bavarian Spessart lies the Hessian Spessart , the Hessian Spessart Nature Park (740 km²) founded in 1963 .

The specially founded association Naturpark Spessart e. V. performs a wide range of tasks as the sponsor of the Bavarian Nature Park .

Establishment of the nature park

On February 10, 1956, the government of Lower Franconia issued the ordinance on the Mainviereck landscape protection area . After hearing the districts and municipalities, the Lower Franconian District Assembly issued the necessary ordinance on December 15, 1959, which the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior declared enforceable on February 29, 1960 . The designation "Spessart Landscape Protection Area" was changed to "Spessart Nature Park". Thus the first nature park in Bavaria was created.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture called for an overall development plan as a prerequisite for the allocation of funds . In March 1961, the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior commissioned the government of Lower Franconia to draw up this plan. On the basis of this order, the Naturpark Spessart eV association was founded in 1963 . V.

Heinrich Degen, district administrator of the then Alzenau district, became the first chairman . The actual initiator, Georg Keimel, became managing director. In 1966 Rudolf Balles, district administrator of the Lohr am Main district, took over the chairmanship . Georg Keimel remained managing director until 1971. He was replaced by Josef Heichele, who was managing director until 1981.

In the course of the regional reform in 1972, the former districts of Alzenau, Gemünden , Lohr, Marktheidenfeld and Obernburg were dissolved. The head of the association was taken over by the district administrator of the Aschaffenburg district , Roland Eller. Between 1976 and 1984 the association was run by Karl Oberle, district administrator of the Miltenberg district . In 1981, Forest Director Christoph Frucht took over the role of honorary managing director. The current full-time managing director is Oliver Kaiser.

Several nature reserves have been set up within the nature park.

National park

The Bavarian State Government planned to establish the Spessart National Park as the third national park in Bavaria under the working title np3 , although the Spessart was not the only region that could be considered for the third national park. The national park should occupy 10,900 hectares. This corresponds to less than 4.5% of the area of the nature park. Companies that profit economically from the logging in the Spessart rejected the national park, which is why the plans were dropped in July 2017.
