Nino Manfredi (1990)

Nino Manfredi (actually Saturnino Manfredi ; born March 22, 1921 in Castro dei Volsci , Province of Frosinone , † June 4, 2004 in Rome ) was an Italian actor , screenwriter and film director .

Life

Manfredi studied law and then graduated from the Accademia d'Arte Drammatica in Rome. He worked for radio and got his first engagement at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan , where he was successful in Molnar's Liliom . He was married to the former photo model Erminia Ferrari . His daughter Roberta and his son Luca are also in the film business.

In 1948 he made his film debut in the short film Tenori per forza and only appeared in small roles in the 1950s. He played his first major leading role in 1959 in Gianni Puccini's L'impiegato . In the early 1960s, Nino Manfredi established himself as an actor with the role of a man persecuted by bad luck in Luigi Comencini's Raped in Chains (1961) and in Luigi Zampa's Anni ruggenti (1962) as a small clerk who is mistaken for an influential fascist. He was involved in numerous Italian-French co-productions until the late 1970s, appeared frequently in television shows and became a popular comedian in Italian film. His grotesque film characters, including an ecclesiastical dignitary in Luigi Magnis In nome del Papa Re (1977), the busybody Trafficone in Sergio Corbucci's La mazzetta (1978) and the illegal coffee salesman in Nanni Loys Café express (1980) won him a wide audience. In the 1980s he reduced his work in film and television in favor of more frequent stage appearances.

Manfredi's first cinematic directorial work was one of the four episodes of L'amore difficile (1962), but he only made his solo directing debut in 1971 with Per grazia ricevuta . For this film, Nino Manfredi was awarded the prize for the best first work at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971 . His next film, Nudo di donna , made in 1981 in collaboration with Alberto Lattuada , had only moderate success.

Manfredi was the editor of a collection of Roman idioms and a cookbook.

In July 2003, Nino Manfredi suffered a stroke from which he did not recover. He died in June 2004 in a Roman hospital at the age of 83. Manfredi was buried in the family grave on Campo Verano in Rome.
