Luigi Zampa

Luigi Zampa (born January 2, 1905 in Rome ; † August 16, 1991 ibid) was an important film director of neorealism , who was less well known in Germany than its great representatives Luchino Visconti , Roberto Rossellini or Vittorio De Sica .

biography

Luigi Zampa found his way to the theater after a few years as a student and initially worked as an actor, but soon switched to working as a writer. In addition to his training at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, which began in 1932 , Zampa wrote short stories and plays. From 1938 he worked primarily as a screenwriter and a few years later also appeared as a director. The films he made in the immediate post-war years are considered to be the artistic highlights of his work: Living in Peace and Critical Years , which dealt with the Mussolini dictatorship and the years that followed. In Zampa's other directorial work, routine entertainment predominates. With the film A Question of Honor , the director found his way back to time-critical approaches only in the later years of his professional life.

His film MP Angelina was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1947. One of Zampa's nephews, Giuseppe Colizzi , also worked as a director.
