Vittorio De Sica (born July 7, 1901 in Sora , Italy , † November 13, 1974 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris , France ) was an Italian actor and film director of neorealism ; since 1968 he was also a French citizen. His film Bicycle Thieves from 1948 is considered one of the best films of all time by film critics.

Life

De Sica grew up in Naples . After training to be an accountant at the request of his father, a bank clerk, he made his debut as a film actor in 1918 at the age of 16. In 1924 he joined the theater group of Tatiana Pavlova , in 1925 he joined the company Almirante Manzini and in 1927 he joined the Almirante-Risone Tofano ensemble. He had his breakthrough in 1927, when he was allowed to step in for the sick leading actor in Spiel in the castle of Molnar . After working for other theater groups, he founded his own acting group in 1933 with his first wife Giuditta Rissone and S. Tofano. There he developed the image with which he would later become famous, that of the young woman's favorite. With his role in Mario Camerini's film Gli uomini, che mascalzoni! (1932) began its popularity. In Italy he was one of the most celebrated actors of the 1930s.

He directed Rose Scarlatte for the first time (alongside Giuseppe Amato ) in 1940. For the Vatican production Die Pforte des Himmels he listed 300 Jews and those politically persecuted from 1943 until the liberation of Italy as extras to protect them from persecution. From 1943 on, he worked with screenwriter Cesare Zavattini , who also wrote his masterpieces of Italian neorealism, Shoe Shine (1946) and Bicycle Thieves (1948). The latter film won an Oscar . With the films The Miracle of Milan (1951) and Umberto D. (1952) that followed, he manifested his reputation as an important director. He often worked with Arthur Cohn , who referred to him as his "teacher". His reputation reached Hollywood, where he appeared in the 1957 war drama In Another Land by Charles Vidor . For his portrayal in the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway , he was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1958.

In the 1960s he made commercially successful films, including Boccaccio 70 (1962) with Federico Fellini , and the Oscar-winning film Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) with Sophia Loren in the lead role. In addition, De Sica continued to work as an actor at home and abroad. His 1970 film Der Garten der Finzi Contini was also awarded an Oscar. De Sica also won the Golden Bear for the film at the 1971 Berlinale . He has appeared in around 160 films and 125 theatrical productions, and has directed more than 35 films.

With his second wife, the Spanish actress María Mercader , he had two sons, Manuel and Christian De Sica .
