action

At the beginning of the 20th century, the seamstress Adriana is beside herself with joy because the man she has loved for so long asks for her hand. However, Cesare Braggi does not ask the seamstress for himself, but for his younger brother Antonio. Cesare only obeys the last will of his rich father, although it is very difficult for him because he also loves Adriana. Nevertheless, Antonio and Adriana marry. When Antonio had a fatal accident a few years after their marriage, it seemed that Cesare and Adriana could still find a fulfillment of their love. But by then Adriana will be terminally ill.

criticism

"Unfortunately, the film seems too sentimental, but impresses with good actors and excellent décor," said the TV magazine Prisma . The conclusion of Cinema was: "Thoughtful and old-fashioned - in the best sense."

The lexicon of international film described the trip to Palermo as "[m] elodramatic star cinema". In his staging, “director de Sica concentrated exclusively on the sentimental aspects of his story”, which is why “the film, staged with exquisite taste, got stuck in the non-committal”.
