Life

Manuel De Sica with singer Nancy Cuomo (1974)

De Sica, son of actor and film director Vittorio De Sica and actress María Mercader and brother of Christian De Sica , received music lessons at an early age and studied with Bruno Maderna , among others .

After a time with the group The Ancients , which released two LPs and made several television appearances, he switched to composition.

The spectrum of his work ranged from popular song compositions (among others for Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett ) to soundtracks to numerous classical chamber music , which was recorded by Salvatore Accardo and Enrico Dindo , for example . De Sica also worked for television.

De Sica wrote his first of nearly 90 film compositions in 1968 for a film by his father; he also wrote the music for his Oscar-winning film The Garden of the Finzi Contini . Manuel De Sica himself received an award in 1992 for Al lupo al lupo by Carlo Verdone ( Nastro d'Argento ) and in 1996 for Celluloide by Carlo Lizzani ( David di Donatello ). He worked with his brother and the directors Enrico Oldoini and Carlo Vanzina over and over again for many years.

In 1974 De Sica turned briefly to directing. In addition to the short film Intorno , L'eroe was made for television , in which his father and brother played roles.

De Sica, who received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2004, died in Rome at the age of 65 after a heart attack.
