Salvatore Accardo (born September 26, 1941 in Turin ) is an Italian violinist and conductor .

Life

In the 1950s, Accardo first studied with Luigi d'Ambrosio, a pupil of August Wilhelmj , at the Naples Conservatory , where he won first prize. He then trained with Yvonne Astruc (1889–1980), a student of George Enescu , at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena . At the age of 13 he made his first public appearance with Paganini's Capricci . In 1955 he won the Vercelli International Competition, the Geneva International Competition in 1956 , the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena in 1957 and the first prize of the Paganini Competition in Genoa in 1958 . In the early 1960s he made his first recordings with the Orchester de l'Association de Concerts Pasdeloup under the direction of Herbert Albert , for example the violin concerto in D major op.35 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1960 and the Symphonie espagnole by Édouard Lalo in 1963 . These recordings did not need to shy away from international comparison with the North American and Soviet violinists such as Isaac Stern and David Oistrach and established his international career.

Then he began his solo career with extensive tours through Europe, North and South America. In 1968 Accardo founded the Orchestra da Camera Italiana in Turin ; from 1972 to 1977 he was concertmaster of the chamber orchestra I Musici , from 1973 to 1980 he taught at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana . He initiated the Settimane Musicali Internazionali in Naples and the Cremona String Festival and was one of the founders of the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona in 1986 . In 1987 he worked as a conductor for the first time. In 1992 he founded the Accardo Quartet , and in 1996 the Orchestra da Camera Italiana was re-established , which now consists of the best graduates of the Walter Stauffer Academy . Since 2004 he has been giving regular summer masterclasses at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana .

repertoire

Accardo's repertoire ranges from the baroque to the present day. He is particularly respected for his interpretations of the works of Paganini and Bach as well as contemporary composers. Salvatore Sciarrino , Walter Piston , Franco Donatoni , Astor Piazzolla and Iannis Xenakis dedicated works to him.

Accardo owns two Stradivarius violins, the Hart ex Francescatti (1727) and the Firebird ex Saint-Exupéry (1718).

Recordings

Accardo's discography includes around 50 recordings from Philips , DG , EMI , Sony Classical , Foné, Dynamic and Warner-Fonit. He recorded Paganini's 24 Capricci for solo violin (new recording in 1999) and was the first to record all six of Paganini's violin concertos.

The violin solos in the film Kinski Paganini are played by Accardo.
