Salvatore Sciarrino (2016)

Salvatore Sciarrino (born April 4, 1947 in Palermo ) is a contemporary Italian composer who is particularly known for his chamber music and music theater works. He is one of the most frequently performed composers today.

biography

Sciarrino was already involved in the visual arts as a young child, but gradually turned away from them when he discovered his interest in music . In an autobiographical sketch, Sciarrino reveals that he is proud to have learned the music as an autodidact and to have never attended a conservatory . Under the guidance of Antonino Titone , he began to compose at the age of twelve. He later studied with Turi Belfiore . In 1962 one of his works was performed for the first time during the IV International Nuova Musica Week in Palermo. The composer himself sees the works composed between 1959 and 1965 as the result of an apprenticeship that has not yet been completed. After completing his schooling at the humanistic grammar school, he first went to Rome and then later to Milan .

Sciarrino was artistic director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna for three years and has also taught at the Conservatories in Milan, Perugia and Florence and in advanced training courses. For several years he has lived in Città di Castello , a small town in Umbria . In the documentary The Accordion of Teodoro Anzellotti by Uli Aumüller (SWR 1999) he was in front of the camera.

Since 2004 he has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts .

Since 2013 he has been giving regular summer master classes at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

In his works he deals a lot with overtones , the sound and the "color" of tones and silence.

Sciarrino became known, however, especially with his anti-naturalistic and mystical music theater works. Most of the works were created in the 1980s for Sciarrino's “Theater der Körper”, which was based on the performance experience of the 1960s .

In his opera Luci mie traditrici , which premiered in 1998, he takes up the tragic life of the Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo .

His opera La porta della legge ( The Gate to the Law ), which premiered on April 25, 2009 in the Wuppertal Opera House in a production by Johannes Weigand , is based on the parable Before the Law by Franz Kafka . Sciarrino repeats the scene of the encounter between the doorkeeper and the person seeking entry and starts a third time, with variations in cast, music, text and scene, and gives the work the subtitle quasi un monologo circolare ( a circular monologue, as it were ).
