Louis Spohr Braunschweig Music Prize

The Louis Spohr Music Prize Braunschweig is a music prize whose management is managed by the Literature and Music Department of the City of Braunschweig . From 1953 to 1994 it was awarded as the Ludwig Spohr Prize of the city of Braunschweig .

With the revival by the citizens' initiative Louis Spohr 2002, the price has been operating under its current name since 2004. It was named after the Braunschweig composer and violin virtuoso Louis Spohr (1784–1859). The concept of the prize aims to promote contemporary music and its teaching in music education. It is currently awarded every three years by a jury led by the Braunschweig General Music Director to internationally renowned composers and is endowed with 10,000 euros. The award ceremony takes place at a symphony concert in connection with the festive days of new music .

In addition, since 2004, the Louis Spohr Youth Music Prize has been awarded annually to students at the Braunschweig City Music School or the City of Braunschweig in the national youth music competition. The sponsorship award is endowed with 1,000 euros.

The prize is awarded by a five-person jury headed by the General Music Director (GMD) of the Braunschweig State Theater . In addition to the GMD, the jury includes the last Spohr Prize winner and three other members. In 2019 these were: Srba Dinić (Chairman), Moritz Eggert (Spohr Prize Winner 2016), Matthias Stanze , Julia Spinola and Martin Weller .
