The East Timorese Ministry of Defense (officially: Ministry of Defense ; tetum Ministériu Defeza ; Portuguese Ministério da Defesa , short: MD) is the East Timorese government agency for national defense. Management is the responsibility of the country's defense minister .

When independence was proclaimed in 1975 , it was named "Minister for National Defense" ( Portuguese: Ministro da Defesa Nacional ). Between 1975 and 2000 there was only one government in exile due to the Indonesian occupation . From 2001 to 2005 there was no independent ministry, only a state secretary. In 2005 the Ministry of Defense was founded. From 2006 to 2015, the Prime Minister headed the ministry in personal union. From 2007 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2018 the ministry was named "Ministry of Defense and Security" ( tetum Ministru Defeza no Seguransa ; Portuguese Ministro da Defesa e Segurança , in short: MDS). At that time, the Ministry of the Interior was integrated into the Ministry of Defense. In the eighth government (since 2018) there is a separation of the defense and home affairs departments, but the defense minister Filomeno Paixão has been in charge of the interior ministry ad interim since the beginning.

The Ministry of Defense is the government department responsible for designing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating national defense and military cooperation policies established and approved by the Council of Ministers .
