The East Timorese Ministry of Education is the East Timorese government agency responsible for the country's education policy. The education minister of the state is responsible for the management . The headquarters of the Ministry of Education is located at the corner of Travessa de Cereja-Laran and Rua de Tuana-Laran in Dili district of Vila Verde .

In the Eighth Government , which has been in existence since 2018 , the Ministry of Education is divided between two ministries, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MEJD) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Culture (MESCC).

Cutting of the department

In the first constitutional government of East Timor , the areas of “youth” and “sport” were initially assigned to the Ministry of Education, but from July 26, 2005 they were directly subordinate to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister or Minister of State. In the Seventh Government , sport and youth were also divided between two different secretariats. In the eighth government , youth and sport were reunited and assigned to the education department. Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport

The MEJD is the government department responsible for designing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating the policies established and approved by the Council of Ministers for education and qualification at all levels of education - with the exception of tertiary education -, consolidation and promotion of the official languages , youth and of the sport.

The responsibility includes making proposals and guarantees for pre-school and school education, including primary and secondary education, as well as promoting recurrent education and lifelong learning, participating in the definition and implementation of qualification and vocational training measures, guaranteeing the right to education and compulsory education to promote inclusion and equal opportunities, the improvement of teaching and learning conditions that contribute to the integral development of the pupil, the improvement of school success and the qualification of the population for better employability, the definition of the national curriculum according to the various Educational levels and grading system for pupils and approval of the teaching programs and guidelines for their implementation, ensuring and promoting the quality of teaching in the official languages, namely strengthening learning outcomes in Portuguese and consolidating and regularizing the Tetum language , promoting the creation of a body responsible for the consolidation, standardization and promotion of Tetum, promoting and managing the school system of public pre-school, elementary and secondary schools and strengthening their ability to respond to needs of the population, as well as supporting initiatives in the field of private and cooperative education, also at local level, promoting effective and high-quality school administration and administration as well as ensuring the evaluation and accreditation of the pre-school education system as well as the primary and secondary school system, promoting training and evaluation of education professionals and ensuring the implementation of legislation on teaching careers, drafting policies in the fields of youth and sport, as well as their organization, funding, implementation and evaluation, and integration into education to promote initiatives, the promotion of activities for the practice of sport and sport in general, as well as the practice of high-performance sports as a factor in sport development and the representation of the country in international competitions, ensuring the implementation of the legal and regulatory framework for activities related to sport and high competition, to set up mechanisms for cooperation with civil society organizations in the field of sport, the creation of mechanisms for the support and funding of projects for the practice of sport and sport, mechanisms for cooperation and coordination with other government agencies to set up the related fields in the Monitoring the implementation of national policies for education, youth and sport, promoting an active inclusion policy in the fields of education, youth and sport, in particular through measures for inclusive education and the participation of people with disabilities the guarantee and promotion of gender equality in their areas of responsibility in coordination with the responsible public authorities and the planning and implementation of an analysis and monitoring system to evaluate the results and effects of education, youth and sport policy.

The MESCC is the central government agency responsible for designing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating the policies established and approved by the Council of Ministers in the areas of higher education and skills, as well as in the areas of science, technology, art and culture.
