history

Ruins of the Portuguese Customs House in Betano

Boaventura , Liurai of Manufahi , holed up with the Queen of Betano for the last time during his rebellion against the Portuguese . In April 1912, the Portuguese gunboat Pátria Betano shot at, killing a thousand people, according to a crew member. The Timorese were finally defeated and several thousand were captured, including Boaventura.

During the Second World War , from May 27 to December 1, 1942, the Australian soldiers of the 2 / 2nd Independent Company who fought against the Japanese on Timor were supplied via the place Betano . Small ships and corvettes drove between Darwin and Betano. On September 23, 1942, the 2 / 2nd Independent Company was to be replaced by the 2 / 4th Independent Company. The destroyer HMAS Voyager brought 450 soldiers to Betano and was supposed to accommodate 600. Due to strong currents, however, the Voyager ran aground on the beach. The recovery was impossible and after a Japanese aircraft was shot down and bombers attacked the next day, the crew of the Voyager was evacuated the following night by the two corvettes HMAS Kalgoorlie and HMAS Warrnambool . The HMAS Voyager was blown up. Their remains are still with Betano today. An advance by the Japanese reached Betano from Dili on September 27, but could no longer achieve anything there.

On the night of November 30th to December 1st, the Australian Navy carried out a landing operation at Betano. Fresh Dutch troops were to be landed and 190 Dutch soldiers and 150 Portuguese civilians were to be brought to safety. The landing craft HMAS Kuru served as a ferry between the bank and the two corvettes HMAS Armidale and HMAS Castlemaine . The HMAS Armidale was sunk by Japanese aircraft near Betano. 40 Australian crew members and 60 soldiers from the Dutch East India Army died. In January 1943, most of the Australian soldiers were evacuated from Timor.

A landing craft of the Australian Navy , the HMAS Betano , was named after the place in 1972 and put into service in 1974. On March 20, 2000, HMAS Betano visited Betano for the first time. In 2010 a boat of the East Timorese Navy was named after Betano.
