history

Ruin of an Indonesian Army building in Holarua, destroyed during Operation Donner in 1999

From 1976 onwards, Mount Cabalaki was a retreat for the FALINTIL , who fought against the Indonesian invaders. Here she founded a base de apoio , a resistance base that offered refuge for refugees from Mauchiga, Same, Letefoho, Aileu and Atsabe . In early 1979 the base was destroyed by the Indonesians. At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian camp in Holarua for East Timorese who were to be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

On August 20, 1982, the Cabalaki uprising ( Levantamento de Cabalaki ) took place in Mauchiga, Dare , Mulo (all Hatu-Builico, Ainaro municipality), Aituto (Maubisse, Ainaro municipality) and Rotuto (Same). FALINTIL fighters and some local residents attacked several Indonesian bases in the region. So the Dare Koramil , Koramil and police in Hatu-Builico and the Hansip (civil defense) in Aituto, Rotuto and Raimerhei . The Indonesians immediately sent troops to the region. In Dare houses were burned down, schools closed and women and children were forced to keep watch in military posts. There were also forced relocations, pillage, looting and rape. The military posts were set up in every Aldeia in the region, plus eight community posts around Dare. FALINTIL fighters and a large part of the population fled the area, some to the Cabalaki.

In the context of the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 , there was a final wave of violence by the Indonesian occupying forces and pro-Indonesian militias . Two women were raped during an attack by ABLAI militia on April 17 in Orema. After the vote on August 30th, they were kidnapped by the militia officers to Atambua ( West Timor / Indonesia) until December 7th .
