The Maubisse administrative office forms the north of the municipality of Ainaro. Until 2014, the administrative offices were still referred to as sub-districts . To the south is the administrative office of Hatu-Builico , to the east the municipality of Manufahi with the administrative offices of Turiscai and Same , to the north the municipality of Aileu with the administrative office of Aileu and to the west the municipality of Ermera with the administrative office of Letefoho .

Maubisse is divided into nine sucos : Aituto ( Aitutu ), Edi , Fatubessi ( Fatu-Besi, Fatubesi ), Horai-Quic ( Horiauic , Horaikik ), Liurai , Manelobas , Manetú ( Manetu , Maneto ), Maubisse and Maulau .

Before the 2015 regional reform, Maubisse had an area of 260.97 km². Now there are 191.60 km². In the east of Maulau, areas were given to the Turiscai administrative office, as well as in the south of the Sucos Aituto. In addition, the borders of the sucos Maubisse and Liurai to the administrative office of Aileu were redrawn.

The landscape has been deforested in many places since the early 1980s, but there are still small forests in the lower areas. The forest cover subsides on the higher slopes. Coffee plantings were created in many places, so that a patchwork of forests, river valleys, coffee plantations and deforested slopes has emerged.

In Fatubessi there are numerous caves, including Bakua , the longest and deepest known cave in East Timor.
