Local elections in East Timor 2004–2005

In the local elections in East Timor 2004-2005 , the members of the Suco Council, the Chefes de Aldeia (Aldeia-Chef) and the Chefes de Suco (Suco-Chef) were elected by the population for the first time in East Timor, which has been independent since 2002 .

Sucos are the smallest administrative unit in the country. It is presided over by an elected council and its chairman, the Chefe de Suco . Members of the council are the Chefes de Aldeia . Aldeias are village communities that have no clear boundaries within the sucos. Other members of the Suco Council are two women, two young people (one of each gender) and the Lian Nain ( German  owner of the word ), a traditional figure of authority. In order not to come into conflict with the traditional power structures, only members of the respective ruling families were allowed to run for Chefe de Suco or Chefes de Aldeia in these actually democratic elections in parts of East Timor .
