Same (pronounced Sah-may ) is the capital of the East Timorese community of Manufahi . During the Portuguese colonial era, the municipality was also named after its capital. In 1936 Same was renamed by the Portuguese, after the former governor of Portuguese Timor Filomeno da Câmara de Melo Cabral , in Vila Filomeno da Câmara . But the name did not catch on and a few years after the Second World War , the old name was reverted to.

history

Ruins of the Ave Maria Church in Same

Same was the capital of the kingdom of Manufahi. Boaventura , the Liurai of Manufahi and his father Duarte led several major revolts against the then Portuguese colonial power between 1895 and 1912 . Boaventura united several Timorese empires into the largest resistance movement that the Portuguese encountered during the colonial period on Timor . It was not until the Manufahi rebellion in 1911/12 that the uprising was finally defeated with loyal Timorese and Portuguese-African troops from Mozambique and sometimes even from Angola and Boaventura was captured in Betano. He died shortly afterwards on the island of Atauro . East Timorese sources estimate that between 15,000 and 25,000 people were killed and many thousands more were captured and incarcerated in the last revolt.

During the Second World War, Portuguese Timor was occupied by the Japanese. They resisted, during the Battle of Timor , Australian troops in guerrilla warfare. The old church of Same was destroyed during the occupation. Its ruins are still standing near the place today.

In 1975 the Indonesians invaded East Timor. By October 1976 the most important cities like Same were also occupied. At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian camp in Same for East Timorese who were supposed to be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

In 1999 the town of Same was almost completely destroyed by pro-Indonesian militias during the unrest surrounding the independence referendum in East Timor . In 2001, the Friends of Same friendship group was founded in Boroondara ( state Victoria / Australia) to support aid projects in the region.

On March 1, 2007, the fugitive rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was trapped in Same with 150 men by Australian ISF soldiers. To him were joined by Gastão Salsinha , another leader of the rebel soldiers and the independent Member of Parliament Leandro Isaac , to support him. About a hundred residents fled the place. On March 4, the Australian Army stormed the place with the help of helicopters and armored vehicles. Five rebels died, while no one was injured by the Australians. Reinado managed to escape, as did Gastão Salsinha and his men. Leonardo Isaac was unharmed. Some rebels have been captured.
