Lospalos is the capital of the Lospalos Administrative Office and has been the capital of the East Timorese municipality of Lautém since 1946 . Sometimes the place name is incorrectly spelled Los Palos , which suggests the Spanish meaning “The Piles”. In fact, the name is derived from the Fataluku words Lo ( Fleckenmusang ) and Pala (garden), which means "where the Fleckenmusangs seek refuge in the trees". Another source names the Fataluku word Lohoasupala for the origin . Loho refers to the courtyard of a farm. There is no connection between the place and the Spanish language.

The city of Lospalos is about 150 km as the crow flies east of the Dili . It belongs to the Suco Fuiloro , whose administrative center is the settlement of the same name seven kilometers north of Lospalos. A large number of other settlements are in between and in the immediate vicinity, so that the settlement center Lospalos has 12,743 inhabitants (2010) and is the fourth largest city in East Timor. On the road to Lautém and further on the coastal road, it is 248 km to Dili. The inland town is the easternmost terminus for the intercity buses ( Biskota ) from Dili and other parts of the country. From the bus station just outside, you can take minibuses ( Mikrolét ) to destinations in the region.

Facilities

The somewhat larger market at the bus station is of regional importance. The old market building burned down completely in the 1999 riots. An art and culture center has been built here since the end of 2012 to show the diversity of the Lautéms community. The city is very spacious, you won't find any taller buildings. The place also offers few tourist highlights. Striking are a holy house (Lee-teinu, German  house on legs ) and São Paulo, the local Catholic church with the pitched straw roofs that are traditional for the region. In 1987 the church was expanded. The small Protestant minority also has a small church in Lospalos. The Masjid Al Taowa Lospalos mosque is slowly falling into ruin. The local radio station is Rádio Communidade de Lospalos RCL.
