Catholic Church of Lospalos

The Catholic Church of Lospalos , the capital of the East Timorese community Lautém , is dedicated to St. Paul ( São Paulo ).

São Paulo was inaugurated in 1968 after two years of construction by Dilis Bishop José Joaquim Ribeiro , in the presence of Sulamá Dom , the bishop of Atambua ( West Timor ). Today Lospalos belongs to the diocese of Baucau .

The bell tower stands above the entrance to the one-story building. It has the steep shape of the roof of a lee-teinu , a traditional holy house that has now become a national symbol of East Timor. The entire roof is made of corrugated iron. The interior is kept in white, without any major decorations and with simple wooden benches. Behind the actual church there are other buildings belonging to the Catholic community.
