José Joaquim Ribeiro

José Joaquim Ribeiro (born February 4, 1918 in Degolados , Portugal ; † July 27, 2002 in Évora , Portugal) was Bishop of Dili , East Timor during the Indonesian invasion in 1975.

Ribeiro was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Évora on August 25, 1940 . On November 30, 1957, he was appointed titular bishop of Aegeae . Ribeiro was supposed to support the Archbishop of Évora, Dom Manuel Trindade Salgueiro . He donated Ribeiro the episcopal ordination on April 27, 1958 . In 1965 Ribeiro was sent to the Portuguese Timor colony , where he was assistant to the Bishop of Dili until he was nominated bishop himself on January 31, 1967. As a result of events during the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, Ribeiro asked Pope Paul VI. about his retirement. This was granted on October 22, 1977. Martinho da Costa Lopes was his successor .
