The Archdiocese of Dili ( Latin : Dioecesis Diliensis ) is the older diocese in the Southeast Asian state of East Timor . The seat is in the state capital Dili . The archbishopric is the metropolitan seat of the eponymous church province, which was formed with effect from September 11, 2019. The archbishopric includes the parishes of Dili , Aileu , Ainaro , Ermera , Manufahi and the special administrative region of Oe-Cusse Ambeno .

The diocese of Dili was separated from the previous diocese of Macau with the papal bull Solemnibus Conventionubus on September 4, 1940, and at that time included the entire colony of Portuguese Timor . Jaime Garcia Goulart was appointed Apostolic Administrator on January 18, 1941 . He was a commissioner in Dili from 1933 to 1937. On October 12, 1945 he was nominated as the first bishop of Dili, his episcopal ordination took place on October 28, 1945 in Sydney , where he had fled during the Battle of Timor . On December 9, 1945 Goulart entered Dili with a solemn ceremony after the colony was liberated. The pastoral structures, such as the old cathedral from 1909 and many other churches, had been destroyed in the war. Until the inauguration of the Catedral da Imaculada Conceição in 1989, the church of Santo António de Motael took over the function .

On November 30, 1996 Baucau was separated as a separate diocese, on January 30, 2010 the diocese of Maliana .

Pope Francis elevated the diocese of Dili to the rank of archbishopric on September 11, 2019 and subordinated the dioceses of Baucau and Maliana as suffragan dioceses to him .

The Archdiocese of Dili runs the Instituto Filosofia e Teologia Dom Jaime Garcia Goulart (ISFIT). The Archdiocese also includes the radio station Radio Timor Kmanek and the television production center Centro Televisivo Diocese Dili . Seara magazine has a long tradition .
