Virgílio do Carmo da Silva SDB (born November 27, 1967 in Venilale ) is an East Timorese religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dili .

Life

After attending elementary and middle school of the Salesians in Fatumaca , Silva joined the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco on May 31, 1990 and studied philosophy and theology in Manila, Philippines . On March 19, 1997, he put his perpetual profession from and received on 18 December 1998, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

From 1999 to 2004 Silva was novice master , from 2004 to 2005 economist for religious studies in Venilale and parish vicar. From 2005 he studied in Rome for a licentiate in spirituality at the Pontifical Salesian University . He completed his studies in 2007 and took over the office of novice master again until 2014. From 2009 to 2014 Silva was director of the House of Salesians and the Technical University Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Fatumaca. In 2015 he became Provincial of the Salesians of East Timor and Indonesia .

On January 30, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Dili. He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in East Timor, Archbishop Joseph Salvador Marino , on March 19 of the same year. Co- consecrators were Basílio do Nascimento , the bishop of Baucau , and Norberto do Amaral , the bishop of Maliana . Pope Francis elevated the diocese of Dili to the rank of archbishopric on September 11, 2019 and appointed Virgílio do Carmo da Silva as its first archbishop.
