The diocese of Baucau ( Latin : Dioecesis Baucanus ) is the second oldest of the three dioceses in the state of East Timor . The seat is in the municipal capital Baucau . The diocese is directly subordinate to the Holy See in Rome . The patron saint is Saint Joseph ( São José ). On November 30, 1996, it was separated from the Archdiocese of Dili . The diocese of Baucau has an area of 6842 km². The municipalities of Baucau , Lautém , Manatuto and Viqueque belong to it .
The importance of the diocese was compared to a medieval bishopric in 2017, as a large part of the economy of the city of Baucau is under the control of the diocese and since independence it has played an important role in maintaining civil functions and infrastructure. Discussions sparked plans to build a memorial for the Black Madonna (Bakita) on the site of the former sacred relic house ( Uma Lulik ) of the traditional Timorian religion . As early as 2010, a statue of the Madonna was erected in the cave of the Wai Lia spring . This place is also a sacred place of the old faith.
On September 11, 2019, Pope Francis subordinated the diocese of Baucau to the archdiocese of Dili as a suffragan .
