The diocese of Maliana ( lat . : Dioecesis Malianensis ) is the youngest of the three dioceses in the state of East Timor . The first and current bishop is Norberto do Amaral .
Overview
On January 30, 2010, the diocese of Maliana was separated from the diocese of Dili . The seat is in Maliana , the capital of the municipality of Bobonaro . The bishopric is located in the Estrada de Cristo Rei in Lahomea . The former parish church of Maliana, the Holy Cross Church in Suco Lahomea, serves as a temporary cathedral . In 2016 the foundation stone for the construction of the Sacred Heart Cathedral (Catedral do Sagrado Coração de Jesus) was laid.
In addition to Bobonaro, the diocese also includes the parishes of Cova Lima and Liquiçá . The total area is 3,645 km². The diocese was initially directly subordinate to the Holy See in Rome . On September 11, 2019, Pope Francis made the diocese of Maliana subordinate to the Archdiocese of Dili as a suffragan .
