Gariuai ( Gariwai , Fariuai ) is an East Timorese village, an Aldeia and a Suco in the administrative office of Baucau ( municipality of Baucau ).

Gariuai is located southwest of the city of Baucau at an altitude of 419  m . The place is in the northeast of Sucos on the road from Baucau to Venilale . To the south it goes over to the place Uaturau . The primary school Escola Primaria Gariuai is located in Gariuai .

The Suco has 4962 inhabitants (2015), of which 2653 are men and 2309 women. The population density is 85.0 inhabitants / km². There are 899 households in the Suco. About 65% of the population name Makasae as their mother tongue. 20% speak Waimaha , which is one of the Kawaimina languages. About 15% speak Tetum Prasa .

Gariuai occupies the entire south of the Baucau administrative office. To the north are the sucos Triloca , Tirilolo and Uailili . In the south-west Gariuai borders on the administrative office Vemasse with its Suco Loilubo , in the south on the administrative office Venilale with its sucos Uma Ana Ico , Uma Ana Ulo and Baha Mori and in the southeast on the administrative office Quelicai with its sucos Lelalai and Macalaco .

Before the 2015 territorial reform, Gariuai had an area of ​​43.84 km². Now there are 58.41 km². Gariuai received the entire south of the sucos Uailili. Gariuai gave the northern part of the border region to Venilale to Triloca, including the villages of Bahamori and Darasula .

The country road from Baucau to Venilale runs through the west of the Sucos. The place Gariuai with its suburbs Uaturau , Luboria and Maucale ( Maukale ) lies in the northeast . In the south are the places Uaibehana ( Uaibeana , Wai-Be-Ana ) and Cairiri ( Kairiri ). There is a primary school, a pre-secondary school and two secondary schools. The Fatumaca Technical School was founded in 1963 by the Salesian João de Deus . To the west, which belonged to Uailili until 2015, the Seiçal River crosses Gariuai. The village of Uatoua lies on its bank . The southern border river Saluhada also flows into the Seiçal . The Lilawy cave is located near Cairiri .

The eight Aldeia Bahamori , Cairiri , Darasula , Gariuai , Maucale , Uaibehana , Uatu-Ua and Uaturau are located in the Suco .

history

There are sources that state that the Sucos Buibau , Samalari , Uailili and Gariuai were united in the Fatumaka Empire before and during the entire colonial period , whose inhabitants still speak their own dialect of Makasae, the Makasae Fatumaka .

At the end of 1979, the Fatumaca Technical School housed an Indonesian resettlement camp for East Timorese who were to be resettled by the occupiers for better control.

politics

In the elections of 2004/2005 was Maria Lidia de Jesus Belo elected Chefe de Suco and in 2009 re-elected. In the 2016 elections , Arlindo Belo Freitas won.

economy

Since November 2008, East Timor’s first hydropower plant in Gariuai has been supplying the city ​​of Baucau with electricity via an overhead line . It was built four kilometers from the site with Norwegian help. The power plant will by the two 187  m higher sources Wainalale and Builai over a 1.7 km long penstock fed. 202 liters per second flow through here and generate up to 326 kW and generate 1.5 GWh per year. A few months after commissioning, a landslide destroyed the penstock and electricity production came to a standstill until repairs were made.
