Seiçal ( Seical, Seisal ; Portuguese : Ribeira de Seiçal , also Rio Seiçal ) is one of the few rivers in northern Timor that carry water all year round. Most of the other rivers dry up during the dry season.

Its sources lie in the north of the East Timorese administrative office of Ossu , north of the peaks of Laritame and Monte Mundo Perdido . From here two source rivers flow north, where they meet at Bado-Ho'o .

After the Seiçal has formed the border between the municipalities of Viqueque and Baucau over a long stretch , it briefly separates the administrative offices of Baucau and Venilale from each other before finally flowing into the administrative office of Baucau to the northeast. In Suco Seiçal (between the towns of Baucau and Laga ) the river finally flows into the Strait of Wetar on the north coast of Timor at the town of the same name .

At the mouth there are mangroves and flood plains.

use

Rice is mainly grown on its banks through irrigation, which is why the river is of particular importance for the population. In February 2001, almost 3,000 people were affected by the river's flooding.
