The Pontifical University of the Salesians ( Italian : Università Pontificia Salesiana , short: UPS) is the religious school founded in 1940 under papal law of the Salesians of Don Bosco .
It existed until 1973 under the name Papal Athenaeum Salesianum ( Pontificio Ateneo Salesiano ) and was initially located in the Oratorium Salesianum in the Turin district of Valdocco , the motherhouse of the order. The university was finally recognized in 1965 and at the same time largely relocated to Rome . Since the early 1960s, before the completion of the new buildings inaugurated in 1965, the teaching and student activities had been gradually relocated to Rome and initially located at the university's temporary Roman headquarters in Via Marsala .
In 1973 the Athenaeum was opened by Pope Paul VI. Elevated to the Pontifical University and the college was given its current name.
The main seat of the university with all faculties is Rome. Part of the theological faculty as well as the international Don Bosco Institute are still located in Turin, where religious studies have been located since the 1920s and precursors to today's university. Most of the professors and many of the university's students are Salesians of Don Bosco from the various countries of the world where the Order is represented.
