Ulrich Schumacher

Ulrich Schumacher (born April 2, 1958 in Bergisch Gladbach ) is a German engineer and manager (including former CEO of Infineon AG). From October 1, 2013 to February 1, 2018, Schumacher was CEO of the Vorarlberg Zumtobel Group .

childhood and education

Schumacher comes from a medium-sized entrepreneurial family from Bergisch Gladbach, where he also graduated from high school. Schumacher then studied from 1977 to 1982 electrical engineering at the RWTH Aachen , where he in 1985 with summa cum laude for Dr.-Ing. PhD. During this time he also completed postgraduate studies in business administration. From 1982 to 1986 he worked as a research assistant at RWTH Aachen University.

Background and career

Siemens

In 1986 he joined the Siemens group and was initially responsible for equipment engineering / testing technology in the component area. From 1987 he was entrusted with the management of the device and system technology for test systems / CAT department of the components division. This was followed by positions as executive assistant in the semiconductor division (1988), marketing management of the memory division in the semiconductor division (1991) and management of the standard IC division. In 1996 he was appointed chairman of the semiconductor business unit (17th place in the global semiconductor industry), replacing the outgoing Siemens divisional director Jürgen Knorr . In 1998 he was also appointed to the central board of Siemens AG .

Infineon

A ten-point program decided by the Siemens board to increase the profitability and competitiveness of the group provided for the semiconductor division to be outsourced under a new name and then to be listed on the stock exchange. The spin-off took place on April 1, 1999, on which date Schumacher also became CEO of the newly founded company Infineon Technologies AG . This also made Infineon the second largest IPO in Germany to date . He became known to the general public through his appearance at Porsche in motorsport overalls on the day of the IPO on March 13, 2000 on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

After various internal differences of opinion and allegations, Schumacher resigned his mandate as CEO of Infineon, at that time the world's fifth largest company in the semiconductor industry, with immediate effect.

Francisco Partners

After leaving Infineon , Schumacher became an operating partner of the technology investment company Francisco Partners , where he worked on various projects such as the design of the Numonyx joint venture between ST Microelectronics and Intel .

Grace Semiconductor

Effective September 2007, Schumacher became President & CEO of the part-state Grace Semiconductor , based in Shanghai. By 2010 he had achieved the turnaround in the company that was ailing at the time of the takeover. However, the establishment of a European headquarters in Villach funded with 400,000 euros failed. Schumacher did not extend his contract from September 2010, but remained associated with the company as a consultant.

Zumtobel Group

On August 22, 2013, the Supervisory Board of Zumtobel Group AG appointed Schumacher as the new Chairman of the Management Board with effect from October 1, 2013. On an interim basis, he also acted as CFO until the end of 2013 . He left the company on February 1, 2018, and Alfred Felder became the spokesman for the board.

Supervisory board mandates

Schumacher was a member of the supervisory board or chairman of several large DAX companies, for example at Deutsche Bahn and other national and international companies, such as B. the Israeli digital TV startup Siano Mobile , the Swiss software company Esmertec (until 2009; today Myriad Group AG ) and Safe ID Solutions .

Task Force “Skills and Mobility” of the European Commission

In June 2001 Schumacher was appointed chairman of the “Skills and Mobility” task force within the European Union, which was appointed by Anna Diamantopoulou , Commissioner responsible for Employment and Social Affairs. The aim, on the basis of the report of this task force, was to propose an action plan with a number of further initiatives to ensure that by 2005 all citizens have access to fully functioning European labor markets. In particular, barriers to mobility should be removed and the qualification level of the workforce in Europe should be raised at all levels.

Legal dispute with Infineon

In January 2009, the Munich public prosecutor brought charges. He was accused of bribery in business dealings and attempted fraudulent proceedings. In addition, Schumacher was charged with tax evasion. The court saw the main charges as unfounded and unproven, as u. a. the only key witness for the prosecution had contradicted. As a result, the court proceedings against Schumacher for corruption and unfaithfulness were set in autumn 2009. The proceedings because of a tax offense, in the amount of around 10,000 euros in connection with a private auto business, were discontinued against a monetary requirement of 200,000 euros.
