Bishop of Linz

Black was born on July 6, 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Diocesan Bishop of Linz and introduced into office on September 18.

Schwarz did not continue the reform course of his predecessor Maximilian Aichern . Unlike his predecessor, he was not prepared to allow exceptions to church norms. He did not fulfill the expectations of parts of the church people in the Diocese of Linz to continue having sermons and baptisms performed by lay people. With regard to the sacrament of the Eucharist , too , he adhered to Catholic practice and adhered to closed communion .

In 2011, Schwarz released the heavily criticized pastor Andrzej Skoblicki from Kopfingen , but took this decision back shortly afterwards. At the end of 2011, he accepted Skoblicki's voluntary resignation request, submitted after a sick leave. Skoblicki was accused of being responsible for “ sect- like conditions” in his parish and, among other things, described the Kopfinger School as “the work of the devil”, teachers as “ possessed by Satan ”, illegitimate children as “children of sin” and unmarried women as “ concubines ” to have.

Upon reaching the age limit of 75, Schwarz submitted his resignation in accordance with canon law . Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on November 18, 2015 and appointed Manfred Scheuer as his successor. On January 17, 2016, Schwarz handed over the bishop's staff to his successor at the festive inauguration in the Mariendom in Linz.
