Godfried Marschall , also Gottfried Marschall (born October 1, 1840 in Neudorf bei Staatz ( Lower Austria ); † March 23, 1911 in Vienna) was vicar general and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Vienna .

Life

He first studied at the grammar school in Nikolsburg , entered the newly founded prince-archbishop's seminary in Vienna in 1856 together with Johann Baptist Schneider , switched to the Vienna seminary in 1860 and studied Catholic theology at the University of Vienna . He was ordained a priest on July 24, 1864 . He then studied theology and canon law in Rome and received his doctorate in these subjects in 1866. In 1870 he became the religion teacher of Archduke Franz Ferdinand , in 1880 canon of St. Stephan and provost of the Votive Church in Vienna.

In 1887 he was a candidate for the bishopric of Gurk , but the emperor appointed Josef Kahn .

At the request of Emperor Franz Joseph , he tried to thwart the heir to the throne's marriage with Sophie Countess Chotek . Although he wavered between his loyalty to the Kaiser and Franz Ferdinand, he opted for the former because of his desire to become auxiliary bishop in Vienna. He was always very close to Franz Ferdinand, but forfeited his sympathy through this interference. Even with Sophie, to whose religious feelings and deep piety Marschall had appealed, his undertaking failed. That not he, but Dr. Lanyi, a Hungarian clergyman who donated the baptism of Sophie, Princess von Hohenberg, the couple's child who was born on July 24, 1901 in Konopischt , and he was not even invited to the child's baptism, gave rise to much speculation.

On January 15, 1901, he was appointed second auxiliary bishop in Vienna and titular bishop of Orthosias in Caria alongside Johann Baptist Schneider . He was ordained bishop on May 12, 1901 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Austria and later Cardinal Emidio Taliani .

After Schneider's death in 1905, he became Vicar General of Cardinal Gruscha and Provost of St. Stephen . Since Gruscha was deaf and blind in the last years of his life, Marshal took on many of the cardinal's duties. This made him very popular with the people. He was thought to be the logical successor, but on January 1 , 1910, Franz Xaver Nagl , Bishop of Trieste and Capo d'Istria , was appointed coadjutor with the right of succession. Marschall resigned from the office of vicar general and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land from March to April 1910, from which he returned terminally ill. Marshal is said to have been convinced that the heir to the throne and his wife thwarted his appointment as cardinal-archbishop and intervened with the Pope. However, there is no written evidence to support these assumptions.

After Sebastian Brunner's death in 1893, Godfried Marschall assumed the office of Grand Master-Procurator of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in Austria.

In 1911, Marschallplatz in Vienna- Meidling (12th district) was named after him.
