Laurenz Mayer (also Laurentius Mayer) (born July 26, 1828 in Markgrafneusiedl , Lower Austria ; † May 13, 1912 in Vienna ) was a Roman Catholic priest , Viennese court and castle pastor , auxiliary bishop in Vienna and titular bishop of Dioclea , father confessor and advisor to Emperor Franz-Joseph and his family.

Live and act

Laurenz Mayer studied philosophy, law and theology at the University of Vienna . On August 5, 1853 he was ordained a priest and then became a cooperator in Staatz (Lower Austria). In 1854 he took over the post of sub-rector and prefect of studies at the Vienna seminary, at the same time he acted as a cooperator of the Church at the court (Vienna) . In 1859 the clergyman received his doctorate in theology.

In 1860 Laurenz Mayer became court chaplain, from March 1863 religion teacher to Crown Prince Rudolph and Archduchess Gisela , as the successor to Johann Rudolf Kutschker , who later became cardinal-archbishop.

In 1868 Mayer became confessor of Emperor Franz Joseph, later also of Empress Elisabeth , and in 1870 he was accepted as a canon in the St. Stephen's Cathedral . The clergyman took up the post of court and castle pastor in 1876 , making him the personal pastor of the imperial family. On January 22, 1899, he was ordained auxiliary bishop in Vienna and titular bishop of Dioclea by the apostolic nuncio Emidio Taliani (1838–1907).

In 1881 he accompanied Crown Prince Rudolph on a trip to the Orient, in 1889 Mayer was a member of the official commission that transferred the corpse of the heir to the throne von Mayerling to Vienna. In 1898 the priest received the body of the murdered Empress Elisabeth in Vienna.

Bishop Mayer enjoyed the trust of all members of the imperial family and was honored or distinguished many times; u. a. he carried the title of a real secret council and was holder of the Commander's Cross with a star of the Franz Joseph Order . The prelate is characterized as an extremely amiable, educated and entertaining person, but he has been accused on various occasions of having been too indulgent towards members of the imperial family as a confessor and pastor.

From 1904 to 1912 Laurenz Mayer was President of the “Society for the Publication of Monuments of Music in Austria” ; the social reformer Franz Martin Schindler was promoted by him.

When he died in 1912, Ernst Seydl (1872–1952) succeeded him as the last court and castle pastor and auxiliary bishop in Vienna ("court bishop").
