Hermann Zschokke
Hermann Zschokke (born June 16, 1838 in Böhmisch Leipa , † October 23, 1920 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Vienna.
Life
Hermann Zschokke entered the seminary one in Vienna and received on 25 July 1861, the priestly ordination . In addition to pastoral work, he studied Catholic theology at the University of Vienna . In 1863 he received his doctorate in theology. From 1864 to 1866 Zschokke was rector of the Austro-Hungarian pilgrim house in Jerusalem, where he also studied biblical languages. In 1868 he became court chaplain in Vienna and was a lecturer for Semitic dialects and higher exegesis of the Old Testament at the theological faculty of the University of Vienna. In 1870 he was appointed full university professor for Old Testament biblical studies. He was dean and from 1884 to 1885 rector of the University of Vienna. After his retirement in 1892, Zschokke was appointed to the Vienna Cathedral Chapter, where he held various offices.
Hermann Zschokke succeeded Godfried Marschall as Grand Master-Procurator of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in Austria.
In 1901 Zschokke was appointed a member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council . In 1905 he became section head for relations between state and church.
Pope Pius X appointed Hermann Zschokke titular bishop of Caesarea Philippi in 1910 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Vienna . The Archbishop of Vienna, Franz Xaver Nagl , donated him his episcopal ordination on December 11, 1910 .
His records of his educational trips to Scandinavia, Russia, France, Spain and North America became famous.
