Helmut Krätzl (born October 23, 1931 in Vienna ) is auxiliary bishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Vienna .

Life

Helmut Krätzl on 29 June 1954 in Vienna by Cardinal Theodore Innitzer for priests ordained and was then chaplain in Baden near Vienna . In 1956 he became the ceremonial officer of Archbishop Franz König . In 1959 he was at the University of Vienna to the doctor of theology doctorate .

After an accident in Yugoslavia on a trip with Cardinal König, he was unable to walk for a long time. He studied in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he received his doctorate in canon law in 1964 . During this time he worked as a stenographer for the minutes of the Second Vatican Council .

From 1964 to 1969 he was pastor in Laa an der Thaya . On September 1, 1969, he was appointed Ordinary Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Vienna.

On September 20, 1977 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Vienna and titular bishop of Heraclea Pontica . On November 20, 1977, Krätzl and Florian Kuntner received the episcopal ordination by Cardinal Franz König in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Franz Jachym from Vienna and Auxiliary Bishop Reinhard Lettmann from Münster . Krätzl's motto was: In the power of God . From 1981 to 1985 the new auxiliary bishop was Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Vienna.

After the resignation of Cardinal König, Krätzl was the diocesan administrator of the Archdiocese of Vienna until Archbishop Hans Hermann Groer took office on September 14, 1986 . In 1987, Groer appointed Krätzl episcopal vicar for adult education and training for priests. He also exercised this function under Cardinal Christoph Schönborn . Since 2004 Krätzl has been Episcopal Vicar for ecumenical issues. In the Austrian Bishops' Conference , the auxiliary bishop was responsible for school matters, adult education, the Catholic Biblical Works Austria and the seminary for church professions.

Krätzl is the author of the book "Im Sprung hemmt" published in 1998, in which he takes a critical look at the development of the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council .

On March 6, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his application for resignation submitted for reasons of age. On the same day Stephan Turnovszky was appointed auxiliary bishop in Vienna.

On the occasion of his diamond jubilee as a priest, Krätzl spoke out in June 2014 in favor of opening the Catholic Church to the topics of celibacy and intercommunion with Protestant Christians. The bishops should "make bold proposals" at Pope Francis ' invitation .
