Franz Scharl (born March 5, 1958 in Oberndorf near Salzburg , Austria ) is an Austrian clergyman and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna .

Life

Franz Scharl grew up as a farmer's son in Obereching, St. Georgen near Salzburg . From 1972 to 1977 Scharl attended the Federal Commercial Academy I in Salzburg-Lehen and then completed military service in Siezenheim . From 1978 he studied philosophy and ethnology at the University of Vienna . In 1982 he began to study Catholic theology and entered the Vienna seminary in 1986 . On June 29, 1990, he received the sacrament of ordination in St. Stephen's Cathedral . Then he was initially a chaplain in the parish Mödling-St. Othmar and later curate in the provost parish Wiener Neustadt . From 1997 to 1998 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1995 . In 2000 Scharl was appointed pastor of the Viennese parish "Resurrection of Christ" in Margareten and on January 1st, 2001 he was elected dean for the Wieden / Margareten deanery .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on February 9, 2006 titular bishop of Ierafi and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Vienna. On April 23 of the same year he received the episcopal ordination from Archbishop Christoph Cardinal Schönborn ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Salzburg Alois Kothgasser and Auxiliary Bishop Helmut Krätzl . Scharl chose Spiritus est Deus (“God is Spirit”) as his motto .

As auxiliary bishop, he was appointed cathedral chapter of the cathedral chapter of the Archdiocese of Vienna and episcopal vicar for categorical pastoral care including the parishes of the archdiocese in other languages.

He is working on a theological dissertation on Emmanuel Levinas .

On January 13, 2007 he was awarded honorary membership by the Catholic Austrian student association Herulia Vienna in the MKV , and on May 19, 2009 honorary membership in the Catholic Austrian University Association Nordgau Vienna in the ÖCV . In 2017, his home parish of St. Georgen near Salzburg, together with Tobias Giglmayr, the rector of the Salzburg seminary, awarded him the coat of arms of St. George.

In the summer of 2020, he came under fire with his courageous no to the planned bypass to the east of Wiener Neustadt and his commitment to the land consumption of valuable arable land.
