Agidius Johann Zsifkovics (born April 16, 1963 in Güssing , Burgenland ) is an Austrian Catholic theologian and bishop of Eisenstadt .

Life

Zsifkovics grew up in Hackerberg / Stinjacki Vrh, Parish Stinatz / Stinjaki, in southern Burgenland. He belongs to the ethnic group of Burgenland Croats . He graduated from elementary school in Hackerberg / Stinjacki Vrh, then entered the Episcopal Seminary in Mattersburg . In 1981 he graduated from the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium Mattersburg . As a seminary student, he studied at the University of Vienna and the University of Zagreb . After his ordination on June 29, 1987 in Eisenstadt , he worked as the episcopal secretary of Bishop Stephan László . From 1988 he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he was supervised by Péter Erdő as a doctoral supervisor and defended on May 2, 1992 dissertation entitled The Diocesan Legislation of the Diocese of Eisenstadt. A legal historical investigation into the Dr. iur. can. received his doctorate . He then headed the Episcopal Ordinariate in Eisenstadt. Zsifkovics was for some time Vice Rector of the Santa Maria dell'Anima Institute in Rome.

Since 1999, at the suggestion of the then Chairman of the Austrian Bishops' Conference , Cardinal Christoph Schönborn , he has been its General Secretary. In addition, from 1994 Zsifkovics was pastor of the northern Burgenland parish Wulkaprodersdorf / Vulkaprodrstof, head of the department for pastoral matters of the Croatian part of the population and editor-in-chief of the Burgenland-Croatian church newspaper Glasnik .

In July 2010 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed successor to Bishop Paul Iby from Eisenstadt . He received his episcopal ordination on September 25, 2010 in the Eisenstadt Cathedral Church of St. Martin by the Archbishop of Vienna Christoph Schönborn; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Josip Bozanić , and his predecessor, Bishop Paul Iby.

Act

Since 1992 he has been a member of the Priestly Council and since 1993 a member of the Personnel Commission of the Diocese of Eisenstadt.

On the occasion of his appointment in Eisenstadt, he emphasized his will to “work with everyone at eye level and in the spirit of communion” and focused on the coexistence of the ethnic groups in Burgenland.

Zsifkovics is the refugee and integration officer within the EU Bishops' Conference COMECE .
