Paul Iby , in Hungarian Pál Iby , (born January 23, 1935 in Raiding , Austria ) is an Austrian clergyman and emeritus bishop of Eisenstadt .

Life

Paul Iby was born as the second son of a farmer of Hungarian origin in the Burgenland municipality of Raiding. In 1954 he graduated from the Bundesrealgymnasium and Bundesgymnasium Mattersburg . After completing his theological and philosophical studies, he received the sacrament of ordination on June 29, 1959 . He completed further studies at the Papal Gregorian University in 1967 with a doctorate in canon law . From 1967 to 1974 he worked as the personal secretary of the Bishop of Eisenstadt. From 1969 to 1977 he headed Caritas and from 1973 to 1985 the education authority of the Eisenstadt diocese. From 1974 to 1992 he was head of the Episcopal Secretariat, from 1977 to 1984 Ordinary Chancellor . From 1984 to 1992, as Vicar General , succeeding Anton Stirling, he was responsible for the administration of the Diocese of Eisenstadt. On December 28, 1992 Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Eisenstadt. On January 24th, 1993 Paul Iby received the episcopal ordination through his predecessor, Bishop Stephan László .

After the Pope's acceptance of his resignation in July 2010, he heads the diocese as Apostolic Administrator until his successor takes office .

Paul Iby is a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . Since 1998 he has been an honorary member of the Catholic student association KaV Austro-Peisonia Vienna in the ÖCV

Shortly before his resignation, Iby spoke out in favor of abolishing compulsory celibacy, which he believed would make pastoral care easier. He also did not want to rule out a vocation of women to the priesthood, even if it was "not an issue" at the moment.
