Alois Schwarz (2011)

Alois Schwarz (born June 14, 1952 in Hollenthon , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian clergyman . He was Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt from 2001 to 2018 and has been Bishop of the Diocese of St. Pölten since 2018 .

Life

He was born the son of the farmer Alois Schwarz and his wife Ernestine (née Sanz). From 1962 to 1970 he attended the humanistic grammar school Sachsenbrunn of the Archdiocese of Vienna in Kirchberg am Wechsel and lived in the boys' college there. In 1970 he passed the Matura , entered the Vienna seminary and studied Catholic theology at the University of Vienna . He received the sacrament of ordination on June 29, 1976 and was named Dr. theol. PhD . Subsequently, from 1983 to 1992 he was pastor in Krumbach (Lower Austria) and on September 1, 1987 took over the management of the pastoral office of the Archdiocese of Vienna. On December 5, 1988, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Chaplain of His Holiness and on December 26, 1996 appointed him titular bishop of Mathara in Numidia and auxiliary bishop in Vienna. On February 22, 1997, he received the episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Vienna , Christoph Schönborn . Co- consecrators were Johann Weber , Bishop of Graz-Seckau , and Helmut Krätzl , Titular Bishop of Heraclea Pontica and Auxiliary Bishop in Vienna. On August 1st of the same year Archbishop Schönborn appointed him Episcopal Vicar for the Vicariate under the Vienna Woods .

On May 22, 2001, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt by Pope John Paul II, and was officially introduced to this office on June 23.

As a diocesan bishop, Schwarz sought dialogue with the Austrian pastor's initiative and emphasized his fundamental openness, but in 2012 he expressed a qualifying statement that most of the demands fell not within the sphere of the local bishop , but that of the pope.

In 2013, Schwarz was accepted into the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested in the Mondsee Basilica on September 21, 2013 by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien . In 2017, Schwarz succeeded Karl-Heinz Frankl as prior for the Klagenfurt Commandery of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of St. Pölten on May 17, 2018. He was introduced to his new office on July 1, 2018.

Coming to terms with the era in Carinthia

Schwarz's move from Klagenfurt to St. Pölten was accompanied by media reports in which the question was raised whether the bishop in Carinthia had "abused" his powers economically and personally. As the Carinthian bishop, Schwarz was the fiduciary administrator of the largest canteen in Austria.

At the center of the allegations was a confidante of the bishop. In addition to the management of the diocesan education center St. Georgen am Längsee, she had held several well-paid key positions in the diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt. The tabloid magazine News reported an annual salary of 91,000 euros as well as a company car and apartment.

Bishop Schwarz had always rejected the allegations.

In order to clear up the cause, diocesan administrator Engelbert Guggenberger and the cathedral chapter commissioned an investigation into the processes in the Schwarz era, for which auditors were also called in, at the beginning of July 2018.

On December 20, 2018, the Archdiocese of Salzburg announced that the Archbishop of Salzburg, Franz Lackner, had been appointed by Pope Francis as Apostolic Visitator for the Diocese of Gurk. Lackner said he would start this service in mid-January 2019.

On December 28, 2018, it became known that the Graz Public Prosecutor's Office had initiated an investigation against Bishop Schwarz on suspicion of embezzlement . She had taken over the case because of possible bias of the Klagenfurt public prosecutor's office . The former head of the St. Georgen Education Center has also been investigated for suspected infidelity since October 2018.

Alois Schwarz's successor as Bishop of Gurk-Klagenfurt, Josef Marketz , said in an interview after his appointment that he expected Schwarz to apologize for his behavior; he had to “understand that some things came across to people differently than he experienced them”: “You have to be tall and apologize.” The Vatican Holy See's media portal also reports on the interview and Marketz's position News .

In May 2020, the criminal investigation into breach of trust against Schwarz was discontinued, only one financial procedure remained open.
