The Episcopal Residence in Klagenfurt , Mariannengasse No. 2, was built from 1769 to 1776 according to plans by the Viennese court architect Nikolaus von Pacassi as the residence of Archduchess Maria Anna , a daughter of Empress Maria Theresa , and was probably redesigned around 1780 by the Viennese baroque architect Franz Anton Hillebrand . Maria Anna lived in the palace from 1781 until her death in 1789. After that, the complex became the seat of the Gurk bishops. The former living quarters of the Archduchess on the upper floor are now used as representative rooms. The facility was sold and auctioned after Maria Anna's death.

description

The palace is a two-story building around a horseshoe-shaped courtyard. The facade is divided by pairs of pilaster strips . The nine-axis main front has a flat, gable-crowned central projection . The coat of arms of Cardinal Salm is placed above the forged gate to the Rococo court of honor . The representative rooms are located in the east wing. In the classicistic paneling of a corner room, 13 oil portraits of the Salm family painted by Georg Weikert are embedded.

Interior of the chapel

The chapel in the south-facing central wing is dedicated to the Mater dolorosa . The simple hall in the style of the Empire was stripped of its architectural structure by a renovation in 1958. In place of the altar is a wood-carved and bronze copy of the Gurker Pietà by Raphael Donner made by Johann Probst in 1801 , to which the statues of the disciple Johannes and Maria Magdalena were placed. On the north wall of the chapel are the console statuettes of St. Hemma and St. John the Baptist .

Georg Tille laid out the park behind the palace from 1779. He was followed by his brother Benedict. In 1780 the gardener's house at the entrance gate to the Residenzgarten is mentioned for the first time.
