Franz Anton Hillebrandt
Franz Anton Hillebrandt , occasionally Franz Anton Hillebrand , (born April 2, 1719 in Vienna ; † January 25, 1797 ibid) was an Austrian architect .
Life

Franz Anton Hillebrandt was also called Franz de Paula von Hillebrandt . He was the son of the German carpenter Wolfgang Hillebrandt, who had emigrated with his family from the Upper Palatinate to Vienna. At the age of 15 Hillebrandt applied to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was accepted as a student on January 3, 1734.
In 1756 Hillebrandt went on a long study trip through Germany and the Netherlands. During this time he worked for the prince-bishop in Würzburg for a short time .
When the architect of the Hungarian court chamber, Johann Baptist Martinelli, died in 1757 , Hillebrandt applied to be his successor. At the end of the year he was hired as Martinelli's successor, but received no salary. Only with the official confirmation of October 29, 1762 was he granted payment. Between 1757 and 1797 Hillebrandt was largely responsible for all public buildings in Hungary. During this time, almost all state buildings in Hungary were built under his direction, including the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption of Oradea (Greater Oradea ) in today's Romania . In the years from 1761 to 1778 he continued the renovation of the Premonstratensian monastery in Bruck bei Znojmo in Moravia . From 1773 to 1775 he rebuilt the Hof Palace , among other things the palace building was increased by one floor and essentially received its present appearance.
With effect from October 31, 1772 Hillebrandt was appointed to succeed the late Nikolaus Pacassi as chief court architect. As such, he also took over the management of the Vienna Hofbauamt from this point on and was responsible for redesigning the Vienna Hofburg from 1773 to 1775 .
Otherwise, he made a name for himself mainly through renovations, especially Halbturn Palace and Hof Palace .
