Balthasar Kaltner (born April 12, 1844 in Goldegg ; † July 6, 1918 in Salzburg ) was Bishop of Gurk and Archbishop of Salzburg.

Life

Balthasar Kaltner was born in Goldegg im Pongau as the youngest son of the Rohrmoos farmer. He first went to school in Salzburg and then continued high school in Merano. He then studied theology and was ordained a priest by the Archbishop of Tarnoczy in 1868 . In 1869 he became a priest in Mittersill , in 1872 in Grödig , in 1874 in Gnigl , and from 1895 also a religion teacher at the secondary school in Salzburg. Kaltner obtained his doctorate in 1877. theol. and in 1886 became a full professor of church history and canon law at the theological faculty in Salzburg. In 1900 he became chapter vicar and a year later auxiliary bishop with the titular bishopric of Agathopolis . In 1904 he became provost of the cathedral and in 1909 vicar general . In 1910 he was briefly a councilor for the city of Salzburg.

After his confirmation as Bishop of Gurk, he was enthroned in Klagenfurt Cathedral in 1910 . The bishop met with partial rejection from the Carinthian Slovenes , as the native non- Carinthian did not speak the second national language. Kaltner was the last Gurk bishop who still spoke as a virilist in the Carinthian state parliament.

On April 2, 1914, the Salzburg Metropolitan Chapter elected Kaltner Archbishop of Salzburg. It was preconized in Rome on May 15th and installed in Salzburg Cathedral on July 5th, 1914. After taking over his role as Archbishop of Salzburg, he was also a valued and particularly capable expert in the building trade. He played a decisive role in the plans for the Andräkirche in Salzburg Neustadt , the church in Itzling in Oberndorf and for the Borromäum in Parsch . During the meager wartime, in which he had to fulfill his task as archbishop, Kaltner could not achieve any far-reaching goals. However, he wrote a textbook for church history and numerous canon law treatises. Kaltner died on July 6, 1918 after a brief illness. His grave is in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral .
